Monday, December 5th, 2011

“Margaret’s Rematch” has gone through a bit of editing (took me about a year that bit!) and acquired a new cover! I always loved the old cover but I adore the new one. Tell me what you think! Isn’t it lovely?

NaNoWriMo – third week, changes and reflections

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Another week, another beginning… of my novel. It’s the third week into NaNoWriMo and I’m barely writing these days, mainly because the story I started writing is not the same story I’ve got at the moment and while I had spent years thinking about the former story I know precious little about the latter one. I’m thinking a lot about it now and today it starts all over again! I’ve decided to change the beginning. Again! How am I supposed to write a novel when I keep changing my mind as to how, when and where it starts and who are the other characters? At least, I’m pretty sure about my MC at the moment. Cross your fingers!

In the meantime, my latest book “Lord Darlington’s Fancy” is finally out and you all have a chance to win a copy HERE. All you have to do is leave a comment and your e-mail. Easy, isn’t it? Please, stop by! :-) )

books! books! books! and more books!

I love books. I love buying and reading them and I have a particular fondness for second-hand books, because they smell of history. However, I am rather limited in my choice of books here in Odessa, because there are only two bookshops that sell English-language books and that more or less cater to my literary taste for 18th and 19th century fiction. Not to mention that my current financial situation doesn’t allow me to buy all the books that I want even within such a limited range. But this summer I was lucky to chance upon “Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire” by Amanda Foreman for a very easy price. And, as I cannot resist a biography, yesterday I bought “Byron” by Elizabeth Longford for a price I could afford. I also purchased “Vicar of Wakefield” by Oliver Goldsmith from Penguin Classics – second-hand and cheap, with introduction and notes. I’ve read it before and I was glad to acquire this book in paperback for it’s a must read for many Regency characters! And I also ordered Claire Harman’s “Fanny Burney: A biography” to be delivered in November.

This summer I also decided to try another venue for acquiring books – contests and giveaways. I didn’t have much hopes, because I always considered myself as a girl who never wins, but I’ve discovered that I, in fact, can win books! Thus, I won “I Was Jane Austen’s Best Friend” by Cora Harrison in hardback that I loved! I also won “Mr. Darcy and the Secret of Becoming a Gentleman” by Maria Hamilton in paperback that I am reading and loving. “Rules of Conduct” (an e-book) by Maggie Andersen – another Regency that I am yet to read. “Writer’s Guide to Harry Potter” by S.P. Sipal – my fellow Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling fan. And today I’ve received a note from Debra Brown telling me that I won her book “The Companion of Lady Holmeshire” – just in time for my foray into Victorian England! I daresay I had an excellent haul this year and I can’t wait to read them all! I also want to thank bloggers and writers who host giveaways! It’s a great way to meet new people, read interesting interviews, learn about new books and have a chance to win one.

And a peeve of mine! I was very happy when Sourcebooks announced discounts on all Georgette Heyer’s books. I wanted to buy at least ten. However, to my disappointment, most of the books (e-books!!!) were not available for purchase from Ukraine! I don’t really understand it – why not? they are e-books for crying out loud! As this was the only opportunity I had to buy so many of her books, I was utterly crushed by such an unlucky turn. In the end, the only three books that I managed to buy were “Frederica” and “Convenient Marriage” by Georgette Heyer and “Georgette Heyer’s Regency World” by Jennifer Kloester. Well, it’s better than nothing!
